“Being” and “Doing”

One the lessons that the Lord has taught me over the past few months came through spending time with my twin girls.  As you might have guessed, the past 5 months have been a lot of work but also a ton of fun.  Steph and I are often amazed at how much we laugh with the girls.  The hilarity never seems to end.  But through the girls, the Lord has taught me the importance of stopping and “being.”  There is always one more thing that needs to be done (and all you parents out there know what I mean), but the more important thing is to simply stop, spend time with the girls and “be there” for them.  This goes against the grain of my personality because I am always eager to get things done and to move on to the next project, but Anna and Elizabeth are content for me to spend time with them and play with them and “be” with them.  When I actually follow through on this, I never regret it.

In the same way, my Heavenly Father doesn’t need me to do anything for Him.  I constantly pray that He would use me to further His Kingdom purposes and to glorify His name, but the more important matter is to “be with Jesus.”  Just to dwell in His presence, to sit at the feet of the Savior (like Mary in Luke 10:39), and to feast on His Word and love His truth.  It is only after “being with Jesus” that we will be equipped and ready to “serve” Jesus in this world.

Are you content to “be” with Jesus or are you just striving to “do more” for Jesus?
