The Battle Belongs to the Lord

Yesterday, I was going to through our church hymnbook and I came across a song by the great hymn writer Charles Wesley, brother of John Wesley. Check out the lyrics to this song. To say the least, songs like this are foreign to us in our modern Christian world.

Soldiers of Christ, Arise

Soldiers of Christ, arise,
And put your armor on,
Strong in the strength which God supplies,
Through His eternal Son;
Strong in the Lord of Hosts,
And in His mighty pow’r,
Who in the strength of Jesus trusts
Is more than conqueror.

Stand then in His great might,
With all His strength endued;
And take, to arm you for the fight,
The panoply of God,
That, having all things done,
And all your conflicts past,
Ye may o’ercome through Christ alone,
And stand complete at last.

Leave no unguarded place,
No weakness of the soul,
Take every virtue, every grace,
And fortify the whole.
To keep your armor bright
Attend with constant care,
Still walking in your Captain’s sight
And watching unto prayer.

Pray, without ceasing pray,
Your Captain gives the word;
His summons cheerfully obey,
And call upon the Lord:
To God your every want
In instant prayer display;
Pray always; pray, and never faint;
Pray, without ceasing pray.

From strength to strength go on;
Wrestle, and fight, and pray;
Tread all the powers of darkness down,
And win the well-fought day:
Still let the Spirit cry
In all His soldiers, “Come!”
Till Christ the Lord descend from high,
And take the conquerors home.

What Wesley understood, and what so few Christians today understand, is that the Christian life is a battle. Every Christian is called to be a soldier in the army of God. What we must realize is that we have an enemy who wants to destroy us and make our lives miserable. If we don’t gear up for battle, Satan will walk all over us and ruin our testimony to the world. This is why Paul told the believers in Ephesus to put on the “whole armor of God, so that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil.” (Ephesians 6:11) So, soldier, are you willing to strap on your armor and get in the battle? You are going to need the belt of truth, the breastplate of righteousness, the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit. Don’t think that you can fight this battle in your own strength. The enemy is crafty and will run you over if you engage him in your own strength. However, if you equip yourself with the armor of God, there is no foe you can’t withstand and defeat. Remember, the battle belongs to the Lord.
