Like millions of people in America and around the world, I celebrated the Supreme Court ruling to overturn Roe v. Wade last week. The ruling which had legalized abortion in the US back in 1973, was struck down and it is now in the hands of individual States to decide when it comes to abortion.

In January 2013, I attended the March for Life in DC and witnessed the pro-life movement in full swing. Even though it was a frigidly cold day, there were tens of thousands of marchers who were passionate about the cause. Since that time, the pro-life movement has worked harder than ever to limit abortions, support pregnancy centers and get the truth out about the horror of abortion. 

No matter what you think of President Trump, it is undeniable, that he must share some of the credit for Roe v. Wade being struck down. Without the three conservative court appointments (making up one third of the court) during his presidency, this reversal never would have happened.     

I must admit, I was surprised by how many professing Christians failed to see this as a good thing. There is no possible way to make a biblical argument in favor of abortion. The whole tenor of Scripture is towards the sanctity of life. It is also interesting how many people have joined the pro-life movement, and yet do not profess Christ in any way, shape, or form. We need not be surprised. The Bible says, “For when Gentiles, who do not have the law, by nature do what the law requires……they show that the work of the law is written on their hearts” (Romans 2:14-15). 

Let’s be clear about something. Abortion is murder! And it is murder of the most vulnerable, weakest human beings on the planet. When the human heart starts beating just a couple weeks after conception, it is conclusive evidence that the tiny baby in the womb of the mother is a living, breathing, person, created in the image of God (Genesis 1:26-27) possessing great dignity and worth.     

I think it is true that many women who are in favor of abortion have never had a baby themselves. Along with that, many women who were pro-choice, changed their mind after having a baby of their own. Sadly, there are those who simply see abortion as “medical.” Like an appendix, it just needs to be removed, and then the problem will be taken care of.  

For decades young people have been told that there are no consequences to having sex outside of marriage. And even if a woman does get pregnant, it can be fixed – just get an abortion. What is left out is how much trauma abortion causes. Women are led to believe that having an abortion is natural and healthy, when in fact it can have devastating effects on the body. Many women are not able to bear children after this, even if they want to, and often deal with guilt for the rest of their lives.   

Part of the reason why there is such a huge pushback to this ruling is because abortion is big business. Yes, abortion is about having sex without consequences, but it is also about the body parts from aborted fetuses being sold and used for research and the interests of the Left. The Supreme Court may have made its ruling, but you can be sure that abortionists will fight back harder than ever.  

This past Easter Sunday, I preached on Genesis 22 and “The Sacrifice of Isaac.” If you are familiar with the story, you will remember that God called Abraham to offer his son as a burnt offering. At the last minute, God prevented Abraham from following through, and in turn provided a ram as a sacrifice in place of Isaac.

How many of those who are pro-abortion would read this story and say – that is appalling! How could God command such a thing, and why was Abraham willing to obey? And yet, think about what happens in abortion. It is the willful murdering of sons and daughters in the womb. Instead of protecting those most vulnerable, it is the termination of their lives before they are even born.  

Indeed, we live in a culture of death. There is so much hypocrisy and lies swirling around and multitudes have been duped. We have all heard the rhetoric of “a woman’s right to choose” and “sexual and reproductive rights” for as long as we can remember. But countless people are seeing the light, and are no longer in favor of abortion.   

This ruling is indeed something to celebrate! Glory be to God! But we need to pray that the number of abortions dramatically reduces. We also need to do all that we can to support women who get pregnant out of wedlock. Even unplanned pregnancies are a gift of God to be received and cherished. This is where the Church needs to be the Church. The people of God need to step up and show the love of Christ in the midst of difficult circumstances.
