For several months now, our adult Sunday school class has been working through the book of Isaiah. One of our elders, John Sensenig, has been our tour guide through this grand Old Testament book. Currently, we are in chapter 32, which means we are almost midway through (a total of 66 chapters). In addition, our Wednesday night Bible study (led by yours truly) just finished working through another prophetic book – Hosea.
This has been a rich experience in many ways. It has helped us see that all Scripture is inspired by God and profitable (2 Timothy 3:16), not just the New Testament. It has helped us better understand the storyline of the Bible. It has increased our appreciation for history (how Israel related to her neighbors – Assyria, Babylon, Egypt, etc.). It has helped us to better grasp the redeeming work of Christ. And I hope and pray it has wet our appetite for more of God’s Word.
Let me invite and encourage you to study the prophets. It might be tough slogging for a while (Hosea was hard at times), but I guarantee you won’t regret it. God has given us His Word for a reason and we would do well to study and apply the glorious truths we find in Scripture, including the prophets.
