Men gravitate towards videos and images, while reading less today. Of course, they are not alone, but this trend seems to be more pronounced in men. How do we counter this? There are ways you can encourage more substantive reading among men in your church.
Constantly point men to the Bible
While there are plenty of good books in print, there is one book that all Christian’s should be reading, including men – the Bible. It’s not that Christian men aren’t reading Scripture, but it often gets sidelined in favor of other pursuits. “Of making many books there is no end” (Ecclesiastes 12:12) but there is only one Book that was inspired of God (2 Timothy 3:16). Ministry leaders should never tire of championing the supreme value of God’s Word for all of life.
Talk about the books you are reading
You want to influence others (1 Corinthians 11:1). In this case, read a ton yourself and then tell others about what you are reading and how you are benefitting. Your enthusiasm will be contagious.
Give away good books
I’ve given away hundreds of books over the years. I know that some books go unread, but many people have reported back their appreciation. Try to have an ample supply of solid, gospel centered resources nearby.
The goal of reading is also the goal of the Christian life. “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). Men should read more to know the Savior, and to live a life that pleases Him.
It won’t happen overnight, but men can (and should) read more. Do what you can to encourage them.

Wow, that hit me where it hurts. Guilty as charged. I read little and screen lots. Screen content is sometimes though-provoking like in a book but most often brain-rot.
