The Time I Met Ravi Zacharias

Tributes have been pouring in following the death of apologist Ravi Zacharias (1946-2020). He was a brilliant man that the Lord used greatly, not only as as a defender of the Christian faith, but also as an evangelist.

Back in October 2018, Ravi spoke at a big event hosted by Penn State University. The following morning, he spoke again at a much smaller gathering for leaders, which my wife and I were privileged to attend. Afterwards, we had the opportunity to meet him and chat for a few minutes.

Like many, we were immediately struck by his warmth and friendliness. I could tell that he had a genuine interest in knowing more about us. After I told him I was a pastor with the C&MA, he told me that that was were he was credentialed and where he had spent the early part of his ministry. Then after asking where I was from, I told him Saskatchewan, Canada. He was excited to learn that and proceeded to tell us about his ministry experience in Saskatchewan. “I preached for Pastor Boldt at Circle Drive Alliance Church in Saskatoon back in the 70’s. I also taught many times at Canadian Bible College in Regina.”

I was amazed! Even after speaking thousands of time all over the world, Ravi could remember details and names from events that took place 40 years ago.

As we mourn the loss of Ravi Zacharias we can praise God that this man used His sharp mind and intellect in order to articulate the Christian faith to countless people. No doubt he will be missed, but through his ministry and writings, he has left the church with a rich legacy.
