As a Canadian living south of the border, I have the privilege of celebrating two Thanksgivings – one in October (Canadian) and one in November (American). For all my American friends out there, today is not just Columbus Day; it’s Canadian Thanksgiving.

This celebration dates back to 1957 when the Canadian Parliament declared:

“A Day of General Thanksgiving to Almighty God for the bountiful harvest with which Canada has been blessed is to be observed on the second Monday in October.”

Truly, there is much to be thankful for. I can’t ever remember a time when I went without having my basic needs met. Most likely you would say the same. Indeed, God has blessed us with material prosperity, but let me remind you of a more important reason to be thankful. As Christians, we have a Redeemer who is more beautiful and glorious than anything the world has to offer. Jesus is mighty to save and He is the ultimate reason for our joy and thankfulness and the hope that we profess. Let’s not forget that this Thanksgiving, or at any time for that matter.
