Standing for the Truth

Standing up for Biblical Truth is not a popular thing these days.  Witness the Miss USA Pageant this past Sunday.  When asked to comment on gay marriage, Miss California responded by saying:

“We live in a land where you can choose same-sex marriage or opposite. And you know what, I think in my country, in my family, I think that I believe that a marriage should be between a man and a woman. No offense to anybody out there, but that’s how I was raised.

The outcry from this response was immediate – people were outraged that she would say such a thing.  The ironic thing about this is that she shares the same view as President Obama and Elton John on this.  Should this outcry surprise us, as Christians?  No.  Read Romans 1 if you want an explanation on that.  The world has exchanged the truth of God for a lie – that’s basically what it comes down to.  We shoud not be surprised when those who stand up for biblical truth are ridiculed because the world hates the truth.  Should this sadden us?  Of course.  And we Christians must have a passion for the truth and be resolved to take our stand against the lies that are being pushed today.  In John 18, while Jesus was on trial, Pilate asked Jesus a couple questions.

37 Then Pilate said to him, “So you are a king?” Jesus answered, “You say that I am a king. For this purpose I was born and for this purpose I have come into the world—to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.” 38 Pilate said to him, “What is truth?”

I find this facinating.  The reason that Jesus came into the world was to bear witness to the TRUTH.  And everyone who loves the truth listens to Jesus.  Why?  Because He is the truth.  Earlier in John’s gospel Jesus said.  “I am the way, and the truth, and the life.”  So when I speak of Standing for the Truth, it is impossible to separate the truth from the teaching and person of Jesus.  And ultimately, it is impossible to separate the truth from all of scripture.   My wife and I just recently purchased the Gospel of John movie and have been slowly working our way through the 3 hour film.  By the way, this is a great movie – the guy who plays Jesus is fantastic!  But it struck me as we were watching it, how often, when Jesus would begin to teach, he would say “I am telling you the truth.”  Now, if you read the ESV or some other translations, it usually reads, “Truly, truly, I say to you.”  What Jesus was basically saying, is that if you want to know the truth, LISTEN TO ME AND LISTEN TO MY TEACHINGS!  But he also gives a warning to his disciples in John 15:18.  “If the world hates you, know that it has hated me before it hated you.”  So if you choose to accept the teachings of Jesu and take a stand for them, the world is not going to like you, in fact, it may even hate you.

So here’s what it boils down to.  There is objective truth.  Truth is not relative to a persons individual beliefs.  We find the truth in the Bible.  Christians must know the truth and take a stand for it.  In the simplest terms possible, that is what I am trying to say

Take a look at what the Apostle Paul writies in Ephesians 6

10 Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. 11 Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. 12 For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. 13 Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm. 14 Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth

Did you notice how he emphasized the importance of taking our stand?  He said this because he knows that if we do take a stand for biblical truth, we will not have to go far – the battles will come to us.  In 1 Peter 5, it says that the devil prowls around looking for someone to devour.  Namely, those who oppose him.  And then it says that we are to resist him, standing firm in the faith.  Friends, the church today is so very weak.  Christians are not grounded in the truth, and because of that, how could they possibly take a stand for it?  As I said before, we must be passionate about biblical truth and we must take our stand.  Lives are at stake in this war and we must be prepared.

For Jesus and for His glory
